Shavuot Jewish Holiday

Shavuot is one of the major festivals of Judaism.

It is celebrated with Cheese, wine, fruit and white clothes.

The Holiday takes place some seven weeks after Pessach (Passover).

Initially, Shavuot had started out as an agricultural holiday. In the days of the Temple, Jewish pilgrims would bring lavishly decorated baskets of their “first fruits” to the Temple.

Judaism has stayed vital by reinterpreting its symbols into modern ones. Therefore, it was invested with additional meaning to make it more up to date.

It had turned into an Anniversary of the day the Torah (the bible) was revealed to the Jewish people at mount Sinai.

In the 16th century, the Kabbalia mentors (the Jewish Mystics) had introduced a new innovative practice to put more “meaning into Shavuot and called it “Tikkun Leil Shavuot” (amendment of Shavuot eve).

The Tikkun Leil Shavuot is an all-night group Torah study session. According to legend, the Israelites at Sinai all fell asleep, and Moses had to wake them up to receive the precious Torah in the morning. To show how much we love the Torah, we stay up all night

Rapoport decided to shape it into two scrolls, in tribute to the Jewish people who have been said to be the “People of the Book”. One of the scrolls describes the Holocaust and the other describes independence.

Major themes carved in the scrolls are: Olive trees, a cluster of grapes, blowing a “shofar”, the Western Wall, the Arch of Titus and even the prophet Elijah.

John the Baptist

According to Christian tradition , John the Baptist was born in the small village of Ein Karem, outside Jerusalem, in approximately the same time period of Jesus’ birth.

John the Baptist was born to elderly parents: Zachary and Elisheva. Since the Romans decided to kill all male newborns in the Judea Jewish tribe, Elisheva escaped with John into caves in the mountains and raised him there.

John the Baptist

In due time, John grew up and chose to baptize Jewish poor people in the water of the river Jordan, in order to help, cleanse and assist them in their hard daily life.

There are two major churches in Ein Karem to commemorate ancient times: “The Church of John the Baptist” or else called “John Ba-Har” as well as “the Church of the Visitation”.

Mysterious underground tunnels in Tel Aviv

Deep down, some 10 meters beneath the Sarona compound in mid Tel Aviv, lie a large network of tunnels.

The tunes date back some 140 years, to the time period of the Templar settlement in Tel Aviv.

Upon their establishment in Tel Aviv, the German settlers/Christian Missionaries- the Templars, had built a flourishing settlement, filled with greenery, vegetables, fruit and….. whine.

Yes, indeed, they had planted vineyards in order to make wine.

At that time, they needed basements in order to store the wine and had started digging beneath the settlement’s streets.

Years later, the British mandate authorities had overtaken the compound, after exiling the Templars from Palestine (mostly to Australia) and had taken ownership of the basements, enlarging them into tunnels; in order to serve for military and espionage purposes.

Years later, upon the establishment of the state of Israel, the Israeli Authorities had refined the tunnels in order to serve them better in terms of homeland security and military purposes.
How to enter? It’s simple, just look for stairs leading downstairs and… explore…
